… to the airport

Several bus, minibus and trolley routes will take you to the Irkutsk International Airport on Shiryamov Street. Keep in mind the working hours of public transportation are 6 AM to 11 PM. Always reserve a few hours for the ride in case of an unexpected traffic jam.

If your flight departs in the middle of the night, don’t take an evening bus just to torture yourself with an airport wait. Take a taxi. A taxi ride will cost you 250-400 rubles, depending on your distance from the airport.

… to the city center

The center of Irkutsk is beautiful, interesting and comfortable. The center is also the best starting point for your exploration of the city and its historical buildings, churches, museums, theatres, streets and highly groomed city parks. A number of cafes, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, malls and grocery stores are all within a walking distance from the hostels and hotels of Irkutsk city center.

… to the railway station

If your train departs from the Irkutsk-Passazhirsky station from 7 AM to midnight, get to the station by using public transportation. Take a bus, a minibus or a tram.

Minibus routes number 99 and 3 will take you to the Mayakovski (Raisovet) bus stop, which is 728 meters away from the railway station.

The ride from the city center will take one hour at most even during heavy traffic time. Take a taxi if your train departs at night — the ride will cost approximately 200–300 rubles.

… to the bus station

The standard tourist routes to the neighboring cities and to Lake Baikal start at the Irkutsk bus station. Buses and minibuses to Listvyanka, Bolshoe Goloustnoe and Khuzhir depart from here. A bus or a minibus will take you to the Irkutsk bus station the fastest, but if you’re not in a hurry, take a tram from the Central Market.

… to the “Raketa” pier

During the sailing period, ships to Listvyanka, Bolshie Koty, Peschanaya Bay, Ust’-Barguzin and Severobaikalsk depart from the pier at Solnechni microdistrict. Angara icebreaker ship museum that stands near the pier is also worth seeing.

Bus route number 16 and trolley route number 5 are the most convenient ways of getting here.

… to the river station

The second Irkutsk pier is on Cesovsky quay. Get to this pier if you want to take a 30- or 60-minute long boat ride on the Angara River. This river station is easy to find. Take a tram to Chkalov bus stop or a bus/minibus to Bytovaya bus stop and walk 750 meters towards the Old Angara Bridge.

Public transportation in Irkutsk is diverse and well-developed. Irkutsk has no subways, however, and traffic jams are as common as in other large cities. Excluding the possibility of these unfortunate delays, an average time for getting from one point to another in Irkutsk is 10-20 minutes. Using the bus

To be completely honest, the buses on some of the routes are not that comfortable. Their interior is dirty and smelly, and those buses are long overdue for retirement. However, the new buses are fast and roomy.

In any case, follow these simple rules. Don’t leave your mobiles or documents in your pockets, prepare to exit the bus in advance and, if you’re standing, grip the handrails tight.

Trams are the oldest kind of public transportation in Irkutsk among those working today. Every day, 7 routes work the lines.

The trams always announce which stop is coming next, easing up your navigation process. During the winter, the trams are somewhat warmer than buses or minibuses.

The so-called minibuses are small and fast vans that transport 14 passengers at a time at their maximum capacity. The distinctive feature of public transportation minibuses is a plate with a route number on a windshield.

If you value speed, get on a minibus. They’re fast even in tight traffic spots. Tell the driver the stop where you want to get out loudly, clearly and in advance. If you’re not sure when your stop is, ask the driver or another passenger for help.

Public transport in Irkutsk is usually available from 6:30 AM to 11 PM.

These five types of transportation in Irkutsk will help you in your travels:

  • buses;
  • minibuses;
  • trolleys;
  • trams;
  • taxi.

 

One trip on a bus, a trolley or a tram costs 15 rubles if you’re traveling in a city. Going to Angarsk, Shelekhov or to Lake Baikal will cost more.
Waiting for a bus won’t take longer than 15–20 minutes, but if you’re going to a remote area of the city, you might have to wait longer.
Always keep some change with you. The largest note you can use is 100 rubles. The driver will probably refuse to give you change if you hand him or her a 500, 1 000 or 5 000 ruble note.
The usual rush hours are 8:30–10:00 AM and 5:00–7:00 PM. During these hours, the city center will have a lot of traffic, and your trip might take twice as long as you planned. Count in the rush hours when planning your trip around the city.
